Most commonly, a chronic sore neck is a sign a postural distortion.   When a person’s spinal curves weaken, the muscles in your neck become distorted causing your head to shift forward on your shoulders.  It is a common distortion called Forward Head Syndrome which has many serious and adverse affects on your overall health.  Here is a comparison of a Forward Head Syndrome Curve and a Normal Cervical Curve:

A normal curve would not position the head leaning forward over the shoulders.   The effects of Forward Head Syndrome on the health of the body have studied extensively.   Here are just a few findings from the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at the University of Southern California in 1987:

*Forward Head Syndrome resulting from loss the normal neck curve will lead to abnormal motion of the first 4 cervical vertebrae, which is necessary to produce stimulus for endorphin production.  Without adequate endorphin production, many sensations are experienced as pain. (body aches, fibromyalgia)

*Forward Head Syndrome can deplete lung capacity by as much as 30%.  Shortness of breath can lead to heart and blood vascular disease.

*Forward Head Syndrome can cause the entire gastrointestinal tract to be affected, particularly the large intestine.  Loss of good bowel function and evacuation are common and may lead to toxic effects and disease in the body.

*Forward Head Syndrome can pull the entire spine and body out of alignment making it rigid and reduce all body motions.  The body then becomes “hunched.”
